City of Tarbes

Tarbes is the capital of the Bigorre region, an old military town, and, since 1790, the county seat for the Hautes-Pyrénées Department. Once a strong industrial centre, Tarbes has diversified its activities, particularly into aeronautics and cutting-edge technologies for the different business sectors currently spreading in the region; the recent spotlight on the Tarbais bean and other regional specialities also shows a desire to develop the agri-food industry, thus justifying its appellation as a “market town”.

The atmosphere is peaceful and it is pleasant to walk in its gardens and parks or to spend time on a terrace, looking at the beautiful fountains.

• The Musée Massey or the Musée des Hussards accessible via the magnificent Jardin Massey, is an old residence in Moorish style. The museum, run by the Musée de France, offers a collection of art and history on the life of the Hussars, the most unusual and most seductive military
• The Jardin Massey An English-style park landscaped by the celebrated botanist across 14 hectares. Varied and rich grounds with a multitude of scents to enjoy during particularly pleasant long walks.
• The Tarbes Stud Farm
• The Cathédrale de la Sède : The first construction dates from the 12th century (Romanesque period). It has been re-designed and enlarged over the years up to the last changes during the 18th century.
• The Gothic Church of Saint-Jean, from the 15th century (the altarpiece is particularly interesting).
• The Tarbes Markets (Brauhauban and Marcadieu)
